Insomnia (2025)
41 Pieces
Canvas holds memory. William Vergason’s new collection ‘Insomnia’ features a series of thin, rectilinear works, utilizing canvas itself as a medium, and creating passages through dreamlike, ethereal worlds that lack discernible forms or lines. Inspired by Mark Rothko’s use of bleeding and staining canvas, William explores interdisciplinary techniques to create sculptural paintings with a focus on texture, and energetic color transition. He uses molding paste to memorialize the texture of raw canvas, and highlight its relationship with viscous paint when applied. He explores themes of foggy headedness, anxiety, and depression, representing the difficulties placed on mental clarity in modern society. These paintings are a look inside of the brain, depicting thoughts, feelings, and emotions. For over a month, William ended each day with a painting in an attempt to document his mental clarity, simply using color and value to represent his thoughts. Some works are stark, colorful, or violent. Others are hardly legible, feeling cloudy or depressing.
